(An aerial view of the Rodeo/Chediski fire - June 2002,
the largest fire EVER in Arizona history, destroying over 500,000 acres. No
those aren't bushes down there - It's our "Tall Ponderosa Pines")
The largest
fire ever in the state of Arizona is a tale to be told
It lit up the sky like diamonds of fiery coal
Which brought sorrow and friendship to the young and the old
And there became a legend unlike anyone could ever imagine
Out of fire and rage came two beautiful souls
Called "Rodeo Brave" and "Chediski Maiden"
And this is where the story lies...

***For those of you who aren't familiar with the Rodeo/Chediski
fires, on June 20 of 2002, the little town of Heber, AZ - located in the
White Mountains of Arizona where Nancy L Blair lives (sculptor of these
dolls) and was evacuated from her home, along with thousands of other residents,
for two weeks because of a fire caused by man/woman. The Rodeo fire was started
first and eventually merged with the Chediski
fire approximately eighty miles away,
causing the largest fire ever in the history of Arizona, destroying nearly 500,000 acres. Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes and hundreds even lost their homes due to the "monster fire". Now, four years later, there is new
growth in the area as people have rebuilt their homes and lives.
The forest is being cleaned up even after four years, new grass and flowers have been planted and the debris from people's properties that were destroyed have been removed. These two Indian dolls (Rodeo Brave & Chediski Maiden) are created in memory of the Rodeo/Chediski fires with hopes to bring some sort of beauty out of what was otherwise a very devastating moment in the lives of those in the White Mountain area. This is the first phase of three phases in progress. Check back often to see what Nancy will come up with next.
